Choosing a TV: Plasma or LCD?

TV Floorstand

Trying to decide whether to get a Plasma TV or an LCD TV? Which TV is right for you? Which TV is right for your room? This article discusses the pros and cons of each type of TV screen.

Walk into any home electronics showroom and you’re guaranteed to be spoilt for choice. TV manufacturers are producing increasingly advanced televisions for a wider target audience then ever before.

Most people are able to choose a TV that they think will look good with a range of features to suit their needs, but many people can’t tell the difference between plasma televisions and LCD televisions which can leave them feeling unsure about their purchase.

LCD Televisions

LCD televisions are ideal for smaller rooms that require smaller television sets. LCD televisions can be as small as 6 inches (the kind found in many in-car entertainment systems) and currently increase in size to about 50 inch screens. LCS Tvs are also great for sunny rooms when light from the windows can bleach out the colours on a regular television set. The downsides of LCD technology are it’s limitations in size (if you want a really, really big LCD television you’ll have trouble finding one) and it’s poor response times and viewing angles; meaning that if a large group of you are watching football (for example) the people sat directly in-front of the screen will notice a slight distortion when the camera moves quickly to follow the sporting action, whilst those sat on the fringes will have trouble seeing very much at all.

Plasma Televisions

Plasma televisions are great for really big expanses of wall as they only, really, come in large sizes. Current plasma screens range from approximately 40 inches to well over 100 inches! Plasma screens are great for home media rooms when light levels can be controlled and a really clear, really big picture is required. Plasma Televisions boast one of the longest life spans in the industry, equal to approximately 10 hours of viewing per day for 10 years! The obvious downside to Plasma Tvs therefore is that unless you have a big room to do it justice, Plasma Tvs should not really be considered although, in their defense, if you did want to put a large Plasma screen in a small room, because of their excellent viewing angle everyone would receive a good image no matter where they sat. Also, their large size often comes with a large price tag which can put off many buyers.
