SCART Cables and Adaptors

For those who still use standard definition televisions or SDTV's connecting your AV equipment using SCART Cables is the best solution for high quality audio and video.

AVRabbit stocks a wide range of high quality Profigold SCART Cables and adapters:

History of SCART

The SCART interface was developed by French engineers and stands for Syndicat des Constructeurs d'Appareils Radiorécepteurs et Téléviseurs or in English, Trade union of the Manufacturers of Apparatuses Radio receiving sets and Television sets. The purpose of SCART was to create a simple cabling system which carried audio and video signals over one cable. The reason why SCART is so popular was because the French made it a compulsory connection on all new TV's sold in France from 1980. This meant that manufacturers were forced to put on a SCART plug if they wished to distribute their TVs in France and therefore this quickly spread out to wider Europe.

As manufacturers were limited as to how many connections they placed on their TV sets, SCART was the best option as a SCART adapter could take RGB, Composite and S-Video signals and display them clearly without any degradation to the quality.

SCART is now the most popular AV connection in Europe, even when you are buying a new TV it is still recommended that your TV has a SCART connection.

The SCART Cable Specification

To connect cables to a SCART plug it requires the distinctive 21 pin male or female connection. This carries over S-Video, RGB and Composite video signals and stereo sound over a single cable. SCART cables can carry over an analogue signal but not enough to carry over high definition video or surround sound audio.

Uses for SCART Cables

SCART is standard across many AV equipment in the UK and Europe. You can use your SCART Cables for:

  • Games Console: such as a XBOX 360, PS2 and Nintendo Wii and many more will connect through SCART cables. It is yet unconfirmed if a PS3 will connect via a SCART cable when it is released in Europe.
  • Set Top Box: also known as a STB, a set top box which connects you to your digital TV service such as Sky, NTL:Telewest or Freeview may connect via a SCART cable. A Telewest TVDrive and a Sky HD box require a HDMI cable due to the amount of data that passes through HDTV.
  • DVD Player: All UK DVD players connect through SCART or composite RGB cables. This was used as to an RF connection which VHS players used which limited the quality of the audio and video.

To get the best out of your SCART connection it is highly recommended that you buy gold plated, oxygen free SCART cables such as the ones that AVRabbit sell. Gold plated, oxygen free SCART cables deliver a much higher quality video signal and will not corrode at all like normal Nickel plated SCART cables. To get the full benefit of premium SCART cables, you need to ensure that the socket is also gold plated. If the socket is nickel based, the gold plates between the nickel could corrode and degrade the quality of the audio and video.
